Bengaluru, 1 June

Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans celebrated their team’s back-to-back IPL triumph through the night in the “right spirit” after a five-wicket win over Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, with police ensuring festivities remained peaceful and controlled.

RCB fans adopted memorial gestures for the 11 fans who died in last year’s tragedy and opted for controlled, indoor celebrations in line with police guidelines.

Given last year’s deadly stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium that killed 11 people during title celebrations, Bengaluru Police deployed extensive patrols across major city hotspots where fans gathered. Barriers were set up at key junctions to manage crowds, while officers monitored traffic and ensured celebrations did not disrupt public order.

Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar said the city remained calm throughout the celebrations, with no major untoward incidents reported. He added that strict instructions were issued to prevent drunken driving and reckless behaviour, and that the police presence was aimed at ensuring fans could celebrate safely.

Supporters gathered in small groups across parts of the City, dancing, waving flags and cheering the team’s victory, but authorities said the celebrations remained largely peaceful.

RCB acknowledged the strong fan support, with star batter Virat Kohli noting the franchise effectively enjoys “14 home games” due to the travelling fanbase.

The franchise has also decided against holding a victory parade in Bengaluru, citing safety concerns and logistical challenges linked to a major political event in the city.

The swearing-in ceremony of Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is expected to draw large crowds and heavy police deployment near key public areas, including those around the stadium.
